ODD - Oppositional Defiant Disorder

About ODD

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) affects 2% to 16% of children and young adults. These young people show an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that seriously interferes with their day to day functioning. Studies suggest this disorder is related to imbalances involving neurotransmitters in the brain’s frontal lobe, and it has a high prevalence in families in which alcoholism is present. Symptoms of ODD are also associated with other disorders including attention deficit disorder (ADHD), learning disorders, depression and anxiety. In addition, many children with ODD are moody, easily frustrated, and have low self-esteem.  Some may abuse drugs and alcohol and also have symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Young people with ODD are likely to develop ongoing problems in adulthood if their disorder is not addressed. Without help they may not be able to adapt to the demands of adulthood and could face a life of failed relationships, substance abuse, inability to hold a job and even criminality.

How NeurVana Can Help

While other programs focus on talk therapy and/or medication as the treatment modality, the NeurVana holistic approach addresses the underlying neurologic imbalances that cause the symptoms of ODD while also providing life-coaching strategies for overcoming the difficulties associated with this conduct disorder.

In our supportive, therapeutic environment, we help the young person bring the brain-centered symptoms under control through a series of meditation-like neuro-balancing sessions called Brainwave OptimizationTM.  This noninvasive, drugless therapy uses high-tech EEG sensors that read brain activity in real time and translate it into sound patterns. Stereo headphones then feed these sound patterns back in a way that lets the young person’s brain hear its own activity, which enables the brain to reset itself into a state of harmony and balance. After a relatively short series of these sessions, the brain is able to heal itself. This leads to the elimination of the symptoms of brain imbalance, which can also include aggression, depression, anxiety, ADHD, lack of impulse control and OCD.

Building on the foundation of these neuro-therapy sessions, our integrated program of structured activities, life coaching, healthy diet and exercise enables the young person to experience the rewards of a self-regulated lifestyle. We guide the young person through a path of self-discovery that leads to greater emotional intelligence, improved self-awareness, and better interpersonal and communication skills. We focus on identifying environmental, social and behavioral triggers that can help or hinder the achievement of personal objectives so the young person can take better control of the decisions that will continue to shape her or his life.

NeurVana vs Medication

Medications for ODD are generally not prescribed unless there a coexisting condition such as ADHD. At NeurVana, our position on medications is that each individual’s condition and situation is unique and should be evaluated independently and re-evaluated frequently.

In many cases, medication is used simply as a way to mask the symptoms of a condition without addressing the root causes. At NeurVana, we focus on restoring optimum neurological functioning and thereby eliminating the root causes of the symptoms. Our experience has shown that the NeurVana treatment program can reduce or eliminate the need for medication for many young people who come to us with behavioral problems and conduct disorders.
